Today Motion City Soundtrack released their cover of “Waiting” by The Rentals. You can stream it on Soundcloud.
I first learned of this cover in 2008, while interviewing members of the band for my college radio show, Penguins in the Desert (2006-2009). As fans of both The Rentals and Motion City Soundtrack at the time, my cohost, HayleyFiasco and I were delighted to see The Rentals listed as an influence of MCS on their MySpace page (pictured here) so we asked them about it…
Attached above is an excerpt from our interview with Motion City Soundtrack’s Jesse Johnson (Moog) and Tony Thaxton (Drums), where Tony first broke news about recording the cover a few months prior.
The cover is cool, we’ve been waiting (no pun intended) four years to hear it, but not everyone in the band was as excited about it then as they are now. Take a listen to the minute-long clip and hear for yourself. Or read the transcript here.
As a bonus, here is our Station ID from The Rentals!

The Shins - “New Slang”
Oh hey, it’s a singalong.
The two kids in front of me must have had a pack to alternate filming the entire show. One even updated the setlist of the show on his phone while his comrade filmed. I get it. I like to film shows too (see above, see my YouTube channel). But this particular instance made it difficult for me. I had to alternate which side I was peaking to see the show through based on which arm the kid used to hold his phone. Two days later and I’m still cranky about that stress.
I filmed this song because I like it a lot, I wanted a memory to relive but I don’t expect a view count let alone a high view count on YouTube. Hell, I secretly filmed most of the Pixies Doolittle tour (no camera policy) from front row and “Where is My Mind?” has only 510 views after 2 years. I know I’m one of 50 people who have our own version of the same exact songs from this Shins show and somewhere out there you can see what should’ve been my view if we find those kids’ channel(s). Mind you, this was night 1 of three back to back shows.
I support filming, but I also think it’s important to be considerate of those around you. Why pay $40 to watch a show through your iPhone screen and block the view of the dude (or dudette) behind you?
I have filmed almost entire sets, but I also have done it discretely for the most part. So call me a hypocrite, I don’t care.
I’m glad I saw the Shins, but I really wish my first and only time I ever will see them, happened a few years earlier.
In other news. I fucking hate Terminal 5. As serious as I am, and as much as I say that, I’ll still go to shows there. However, after this I decided, if I will only go if I like band on a scale of 1 - 10 somewhere between 8.5 and 10.

This deserves more views in my opinion. It was an amazing show, the dancers were A++
Jeff Buckley is one of my favorite musicians. It is heartbreaking to know I will never have the chance to see him play live, but I did have the chance to attend “the next best thing” - a Jeff Buckley tribute concert at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. Gary Lucas (who co-wrote two songs on Grace and collaborated with Buckley) was the host for the event and also played guitar on a few songs. It was a benefit for Road Recovery and had a whole slew of musicians playing tribute.
Hearing Lucas play guitar on songs he cowrote with Jeff and share stories about working with him, was humbling. I know the comparison is wrong to make, but it really felt like the closest chance I got to ever being able to see Jeff Buckley live on a far smaller degree, because I got to hear one of the gutarists on Grace, live.
I always get an overwhelming feeling when I hear stories from people who actually knew Jeff or got to hear him in person. It was awe inspiring that night to be there with people of all ages who share a common bond: Jeff Buckley’s music.
In other news, they finally are getting things started on the bioepic movie of Jeff Buckley’s life. They’re considering James Franco or Robert Pattinson to play Buckley. I’m hoping Franco gets the part.
